The City of Concord will honor local veterans during the annual Veterans Salute 5K and 10K races in Downtown Concord on Saturday, November 11. There will be a special presentation by Mayor Pro Tem JC McKenzie to the American Legion Post 51 prior to the race. The city is also once again partnering with Cabarrus County and the Boys and Girls Club of Cabarrus County to host a celebration honoring our community’s local heroes. The event begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday and all community members are invited to attend.

Veterans Salute 5K/10K

There is still time to sign-up for this annual race through Downtown Concord to honor the brave men and women who have served our country. Online registration is open through Saturday, November 11, with additional opportunities to register in person at the event.

Pre-race activities begin at 7:30 a.m. and include children’s arts and crafts, outdoor games, and a DJ, plus Duck Donuts food truck will be on site with coffee and sweet treats. A free one-mile family fun-run starts at 8:30 a.m. 

At the conclusion of the fun-run, Mayor Pro Tem McKenzie will present the American Legion Post 51 with a banner signed by hundreds of community members expressing support and gratitude for the service and sacrifice of our local veterans. Afterwards, the American Legion Post 51 Color Guard will present our nation’s colors with a signing of the national anthem before the start of the 5K and 10K races. 

Road Closures to accommodate the event begin at 7 a.m. on Saturday, November 11. During the event, McCachern Boulevard between Cabarrus and Corban Avenues will be closed to through traffic. Businesses along McCachern Boulevard will remain accessible from Means Avenue. It is a right turn only from Means Avenue onto McCachern Boulevard from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Northbound Corban Avenue from Union Street to Church Street will also close briefly at 9:30 a.m. to safely allow the 10K runners to complete their race.

Veterans Day Celebration at the Boys and Girls Club

The community is invited to honor local veterans with a special celebration at the Boys and Girls Club at 247 Spring St NW in Concord. The event is on Saturday, November 11 at 11:00 a.m. and is hosted in partnership with Cabarrus County and the Boys and Girls Club of Cabarrus County. The Oak Grove Baptist Church Veterans Ministry is providing refreshments. The event is free, and all are welcome to attend.

City of Concord Facility Closures

All City of Concord government offices will be closed on Friday, November 10 in observance of Veterans Day.

City Recreation Centers will follow holiday hours on Friday, November 10 and open from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., and centers will be open 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, November 11. The David Phillips Activity Center will be closed on Friday and Saturday.

Rider Transit will operate on a regular schedule on Veterans Day. Military veterans are reminded that they are eligible for a Reduced Fare ID Card. Reduced Fare ID Card applications are available online or at the Rider Transit Center Customer Service Office located at 45 Transit Ct NW in Concord.
