The intersection of Cabarrus Avenue and Union Street is scheduled to close from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on February 18-19, 2025, weather permitting, while crews install a decorative compass to the asphalt. The compass is a design feature of the new Downtown Concord Streetscape and one of the finishing touches on the project.

The intersection of Cabarrus Avenue and Union Street is Concord’s center square. Union Street is split north and south by Cabarrus Avenue, and Cabarrus Avenue is split west and east by Union Street. These two streets determine whether Concord’s streets are designated NE, NW, SE, or SW. The Streetscape Project incorporated the stamped compass feature in the intersection as a nod to the city’s rich history and exciting future as the new streetscape ushers in new downtown experiences.

The City shared a video on social media talking about the compass and the importance of the center square.  More information about the streetscape project is available online at concorddowntown.com/streetscape.

During the closure, the Municipal Parking Deck will remain accessible from both the Union Street and Cabarrus Avenue entrances. Additional parking is available in the County Parking Deck at the corner of Corban Avenue and Spring Street. A complete listing of free parking for visitors is available online at concorddowntown.com/parking.
