April marks Child Abuse Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about the prevalence of child abuse and to honor those who have been affected by it. To commemorate this important month, the community is invited to attend a Pinwheel Ceremony on Wednesday, April 23rd, from 1:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Cabarrus County Courthouse Plaza located at 61 Union St. S Concord, NC 28025. The event aims to raise awareness for child abuse victims and show support for their protection and healing. Paula Yost, Chair of the Cabarrus County Child Protection Team, shared, “One of the biggest dangers to public health is childhood trauma. Our team works together to reduce physical and emotional damage to children. Taking care of our kids creates a happier, healthier society where everyone.”
The ceremony will feature remarks from representatives of local agencies and community leaders, followed by the planting of pinwheels across the county. Pinwheels are a national symbol of child abuse prevention, and this event will serve as a visible reminder of the community's commitment to ending abuse and promoting positive environments for children to thrive. District Attorney Ashlie Shanley shared, “During the Pinwheel ceremony, we invite the community to stand with us as we raise awareness of child abuse and work to prevent it.”
Attendees are encouraged to wear blue on the day of the ceremony to show solidarity in the fight against child abuse. Additionally, attendees are encouraged to snap a photo with a blue pinwheel they spot around town and share it on social media to show their support for child abuse awareness. Use the hashtag #CabCoProtects2025 to help spread the message and raise awareness throughout the community.
