The City of Concord’s annual street preservation work begins this week with contractors starting work on a portion of Union Street South. Over the next six months, contractors will lay over 30,000 tons of asphalt on city streets in neighborhoods across Concord. Work will include milling, paving, patching, and installing pavement markings on 17.3 lane miles of city streets.

Starting today, contract crews are working on a portion of Union Street South between Tulip Avenue SW and Rollingwood Drive SE. Weather permitting, work will take place between approximately 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on weekdays. Motorists should exercise caution in the work area and watch for flaggers directing traffic as temporary lane shifts and lane closures may be necessary. On-street parking will be restricted in the work area during work hours.

The Contractor will be working to maintain access to all driveways, with possible brief delays while crews work in front of residences. Residents’ weekly garbage, recycling, yard and bulky waste collection will not be interrupted during the project. Residents are reminded, however, to place all items curbside no later than 6 a.m. on their service day to avoid a missed collection. Residents are also reminded not to place garbage and recycling bins, bulky or yard waste, in the roadway.

The annual street preservation contract was approved by City Council during the June 12, 2025, meeting. The Fiscal Year 2026 contract includes resurfacing portions of Union Street, Market Street, and Spring Street in Downtown Concord, several streets in the Logan, Sheffield Manor, and Kings Crossing neighborhoods, along with additional streets throughout the city.

Available on the City’s website is a map highlighting the specific city streets that will have work done through this program. The map will be updated throughout the project to note when work is scheduled, underway, and completed: https://concordnc.gov/streetprojects.
