Downtown Streetscape Public Art

As part of the FY2023-24 Budget, the Public Art Commission and City Council identified the Downtown Streetscape Project as the ideal first project for the Commission to undertake in their inaugural year. This project establishes an Annual Revolving Art Show program, including the selection and installation of four (4) loaned sculptures, plus one commissioned mural, on the newly renovated Streetscape on Union Street in Downtown Concord. Locations have been determined, see more below. The mural will cover a fence and remain on display until that fence is demolished or moved to make way for construction on a currently vacant lot.

Sculpture Show Entry Process

The Concord Public Art Commission is launching an open call for artists to participate in Downtown Concord’s inaugural sculpture show.

Artists may submit an outdoor piece for consideration in by Friday, December 20th. 

 


Selection and Installation

The Public Art Commission invited sculptors to submit their favorite outdoor piece for consideration for the Downtown Concord Sculpture Show. Selected pieces will be carefully sited to enhance the sculpture’s visibility and ease of access. 

Selected artists will receive a $1,500 stipend. Sculptures will be selected by a local jury. Work from individuals or teams will be considered; student work is encouraged.

Artists may submit one entry. Please including up to 3 high resolution images per sculpture with completed entry form.

Selected artists will transport and install pieces with City of Concord on-site assistance where needed and prearranged.  See engineering drawings for specifics on support bases.  Sculptors are responsible for directing City staff and providing anchoring systems to connect with supplied base. 

Work will be insured by the City of Concord under certain limits.

 


General Criteria

Selected pieces will:

  • Demonstrate creative vision and use of materials
  • Show integrity of structure and craftsmanship
  • Be weather-resistant
  • Be suitable for public display
  • Be stable, free-standing or mountable, or site specific
  • Include no words, logos, commercial speech or advertising
  • Be large enough to be easily seen

Mural Entry Process

  • One application per artist

  • Template provided should the artist like to submit a sketch to support their written application.

Selection and Installation

The Public Art Commission invites artists to submit their design ideas for a mural for downtown Concord.  The selected artist will receive a $6,000 stipend. 

Artists should reside in Cabarrus, Stanly, Union, Mecklenburg, Iredell or Rowan County.

Mural applications will be evaluated based on artists:

  • Previous work examples
  • Artist’s familiarity with downtown Concord
  • Artistic vision
  • Understanding of design criteria

Artist will be responsible in providing materials needed to implement their design.

 


General Criteria

Selected designs will:

  • Fit on the 6’ x 40’ picket fence
  • Reflect the history, culture, and vibrancy of downtown Concord
  • Display creativity and diversity
  • Be suitable for public display
  • Include no words, logos, commercial speech or advertising
  • Use a minimum of three colors
  • Use materials that are weather-resistant
